Digital Learning in Year 4

This semester the Year 4’s have been extending their learning with Kahoot. Students have been using their own devices to answer quizzes related to a concept or topic that has been covered in class. This tool has been great to discuss students’ thinking, clear any misconceptions and have students working together as a team. Kahoot has helped build discussion in the classroom and given students confidence to share, reason and gain a deeper understanding.

Alliteration – Reading

Over the last two weeks of Term 3, 4E has been looking at ‘Figurative Language’ as a part of our Reading sessions.

We have looked at idioms, metaphors and similes, hyperbole, alliteration, personification and onomatopoeia.

Below you will see our E-book of Alliterations from A-Z.

First we collaborated as a whole class using ‘PowerPoint Online’ and inserted our own alliteration into the shared document. Then we transferred the information over into ‘Youblisher’ an online program which created our E-book.

Poetry Writing

In Year 4, we have been discovering fun and innovative ways to share our learning with others. 4D have written many poems in different poetry styles, including limerick, haiku, cinquain, diamante, simile, metaphor, alliteration and rhyming. To show case our work we created an e-book using a website called StoryBird.

Health Project

Year 4 students are working on a health project where they are using research skills such as using key words in a search engine, deciding a credible and non-credible source and paraphrasing information found. Here are year 4 students putting these skills into action.

Reading – QAR (Question, Answer and Response)

Whilst students listened to the book ‘The Sweetest Fig’ by Chris Van Allsburg, they were encourage to record as many questions or wondering they had about the text. Then, accessing a PDF file from the schools network, student classified their questions into 4 categories – right there (literal questions), think and search (inferential questions), on my own (evaluative questions) and author and me.

Spelling

Students are encouraged to practice their spelling words in a variety of different ways. A fun and exciting way 4C and 4D enjoy, is using an internet program called Spelling City. This web site allows students to use their own list of spelling words to play interactive games.  http://www.spellingcity.com/

Mathematics – Symmetry

Students accessed an array of websites to create visual images that showed symmetry. Once an image was created, students use a Snipping Tool to save their picture. Lastly, each image was inserted into Paint where students drew the lines of symmetry for each image.

Reading – Sequencing

Students watched an audio retelling of David Shannons ‘A Bad Case of the Stripes’ via the class blog. Then, in their reading books students recounted the main events in order using dot points.

Science Ebooks

Students were given a medical test to research as a group using Office365 PowerPoint. This allows students to all actively work on the one document at the same time. The students PowerPoint’s were then turned in an ebook using a web program called Youblisher.
